Lack of Government Schemes Causes Enrollment Drop at KGTTI

Student enrolment at KGTTI has sharply declined due to the discontinuation of government skill development schemes.

Student numbers at the Karnataka German Technical Training Institute (KGTTI) have dropped due to the absence of government skill training schemes. Earlier, the institute had thousands of students under schemes like Chief Minister’s Kaushalya Karnataka Yojane (CMKKY) and Special Component Plan (SCP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP). With the discontinuation of these schemes, enrolment has fallen, and the institute is now struggling with infrastructure challenges.

The institute, run by the department of employment and training, lacks infrastructure for smooth management.

The centre was established at ITI college premises, in 2015. Under the CMKKY from 2018, around 3,000 students were trained. Similarly, 60 students were trained under the District Industries Centre (DIC) scheme, and under SCP/TSP, more than 1,500 students were trained. Additionally, 120 were trained under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM). The strength was full last year, with approximately 720 students trained. Now, only 36 students remain. Almost all girls are receiving training at their hostel. Labs have also been set up in the hostel.

KGTTI in-charge Director Basavaprabhu Hiremath said “The centre is providing high-quality education for students, with over 5,000 students trained. Government schemes and SCP/TSP schemes are being implemented effectively. Now, the regular govt skill training schemes are not coming, and the student strength has come down.Hiremath said that the centre has to attract more students.” “The centre does not have independent infrastructure, but land has been sanctioned at Navanagar. The blueprint for the infrastructure has been made,” he said.

“All facilities on the premises, such as hostels and labs, can be provided. Hundreds of students will be trained. A proposal has been sent to the govt seeking new infrastructure for the centre. We have hopes that the govt will announce it,” KGTTI in-charge Director Basavaprabhu Hiremath said.
