HC Adjourns Hearing on PIL Seeking Stay on Caste Census

The Karnataka High Court, which was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a stay on the ongoing Caste Census, adjourned the proceedings to today. The Socio-Educational Status Survey, commonly referred to as the Caste Census, commenced in the state on September 22. Following its launch, a PIL was filed challenging the survey, prompting the High Court to take up the matter.

The bench, comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Babu and Justice C.M. Joshi, stated that if the petitioner wishes to present additional arguments or submissions regarding the PIL, they may do so during the next hearing scheduled for Thursday. Notices regarding the PIL have been issued to the central and state governments, as well as the Census Board, ensuring that all concerned authorities are formally informed and given an opportunity to respond.

The court clarified that the final hearing on the request for an interim stay of the caste census will take place during the next session. Until then, the ongoing socio-educational survey will continue as per the state government’s schedule. The adjournment allows both the petitioner and the respondents to prepare detailed submissions and address any legal and administrative concerns raised in connection with the exercise. The matter is expected to be closely watched, given its significance in the context of state policy and social data collection.
