UK Weighs Scrapping Visa Fees to Attract Top Global Talent

The UK is considering scrapping visa fees for top global talent to attract elite professionals and boost economic growth.

London

The British government is considering plans to abolish visa fees for the world’s most sought-after professionals in a bid to make the UK a leading hub for global talent. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s “global talent task force” is reportedly developing proposals to entice elite scientists, academics, and digital innovators as part of a broader strategy to boost economic growth.

According to officials briefed on the discussions, the plan would target individuals who have studied at the world’s top five universities or won prestigious international awards. The move comes as the United States tightens immigration rules, including a new $100,000 fee on H-1B visas imposed by the Trump administration from Sunday a step widely seen as discouraging foreign talent.

Supporters of the UK plan believe this offers a strategic opening for Britain to overhaul its high-end visa system, ahead of the November 26 Budget. Currently, the UK’s Global Talent Visa costs £766 ($1,030) per applicant, with spouses and children paying the same amount. Cutting fees to zero could strengthen the UK’s position as a global innovation hub, proponents argue.

Discussions are underway between Number 10 and the Treasury, but no final decision has been announced. Observers say the proposal aligns with Starmer’s pledge to stimulate investment and attract world-class expertise to drive post-Brexit growth. The Treasury and Downing Street have yet to comment on the report
