BLOs told to report interference during SIR

Security for BLOs will be strictly reviewed, with the CEO warning negligence will be reported; ECI urges state CEOs to prioritize BLO safety in the field

Kolkata

With the Election Commission of India (ECI) likely to begin its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal next month, the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office is tightening preparations to ensure a smooth process. Booth-Level Officers (BLOs), who handle voter verification at the grassroots, have been instructed to immediately report any interference while on duty.

An official from the CEO’s office said BLOs must inform the CEO directly if they face resistance, non-cooperation, or pressure from political groups or administrative staff. Depending on the severity, the CEO will act swiftly and escalate the matter to the ECI in New Delhi. The commission, in turn, may recommend strong disciplinary action against those found guilty of obstructing BLOs.

Security arrangements for BLOs will also undergo strict review. The CEO’s office warned that any negligence in providing proper protection would be reported to the commission for corrective steps. The ECI has already issued clear instructions to state CEOs to prioritize BLO safety while they carry out field duties.

The move comes amid heightened concerns over possible political interference during the revision drive. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has also raised alarms about BLO safety, stressing that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has repeatedly reminded that BLOs are state employees, making them vulnerable to local pressures.

Officials believe these safeguards are essential for maintaining the credibility of the revision exercise. With BLOs playing the most crucial role in updating voter rolls, the CEO’s office is determined to ensure they can perform their responsibilities without fear or obstruction.
