Armed gang robs HDFC Bank in Jharkhand

Deoghar

In a shocking daylight robbery, armed criminals looted cash and jewellery worth over Rs 1 crore from an HDFC Bank branch in Madhupur, Deoghar district, on Monday afternoon.

The incident took place between 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m. at the branch on Rajbari Road, located in the busy Madhupur Bazaar. Eyewitnesses said two men disguised in helmets and burqas entered first, followed by four more. Armed with pistols, the gang threatened customers and employees, seizing mobile phones to block calls for help.

Witnesses reported that anyone resisting was assaulted, creating panic inside the bank. Over nearly 20 minutes, the robbers filled bags with cash, gold coins, and valuables. They also managed to access lockers, escaping with jewellery worth several lakhs. Before fleeing, the gang shut the bank’s main shutter from outside, giving them extra time to disappear before passersby raised alarm.

Police teams, led by Madhupur station officers and senior officials, rushed to the scene immediately after. Superintendent of Police Kumar Saurabh later arrived and formed a special investigation team (SIT) to track down the culprits. CCTV footage from inside the bank and nearby areas is being examined to identify the suspects.

Though the exact loss is yet to be confirmed, initial estimates suggest it exceeds Rs 1 crore. The police have launched raids on possible hideouts and expressed confidence that the gang will be arrested soon.

The daring heist has triggered alarm over bank security in the region, with authorities expected to review safety measures to prevent such incidents in future.
