During an International Coastal Beach Cleanup program held at Malpe Beach, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. emphasized the health hazards posed by solid waste and microplastics in water bodies.
She urged citizens to make a significant impact by collecting at least three pieces of plastic waste daily and disposing of them in designated bins, highlighting the need for collective action to control plastic pollution.
The event, organized by the Udupi district administration, Pollution Control Board, former Manipal NSS unit, various colleges, Canara Bank, and Adani Group, saw participation from local officials and students.
Attendees included Canara Bank General Manager H.K. Gangadhar, Municipal President Prabhakar Poojary, council member Manjunath, Environmental Officer K.K. Karthi Kumar, and program coordinator Dr.Balakrishna S. Maddodi.
The cleanup drive resulted in the collection and segregation of over 2.5 tons of waste, which was handed over to the Udupi Municipal Corporation for proper disposal. To further promote environmental consciousness and eliminate single-use plastics, posters and pamphlets were released for distribution in schools and colleges by MIT, NST, MIT’s Civil Engineering Department, and the Pollution Control Board.
Around 40 Canara Bank officials, alongside numerous students, actively participated, underscoring the community’s commitment to a cleaner coastline.
