Poonam Pandey Cast as Mandodari in Ramleela

Actress Poonam Pandey, often in the spotlight for her bold social media posts, is now making headlines for a different reason. Known for her debut in the 2013 film Nasha, she has largely stayed away from films since 2018, though she occasionally appears in web series and reality shows while remaining active online.

This year, Poonam has been chosen to play Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, in the grand Luv-Kush Ramleela at Delhi’s Red Fort. Actor Arya Babbar will portray Ravana. While her fans welcomed the news, several Hindu organizations, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, have voiced strong objections to her casting.

Thanking the organizers, Poonam said she was honored to be part of such a prestigious event. Ramleela is not just a religious drama but also a celebration of Indian culture and tradition. It is a matter of pride for me to play Mandodari, she expressed. Arya Babbar also conveyed gratitude for his role.

In the Ramayana, Mandodari is described as the daughter of demon king Mayasura and an apsara. Renowned for her beauty, wisdom, and noble character, she is remembered as a loyal wife who often tried to guide Ravana towards righteousness.

However, Hindu groups remain firm in their opposition, claiming Poonam’s bold public image does not suit the dignity of such a revered character. They have urged the Ramleela committee to reconsider their decision and withdraw her selection.
