Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said on Friday that she has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging him to review the case of jailed JKLF chief Yasin Malik with compassion. Her appeal comes amid reports quoting Malik’s affidavit to the Delhi High Court, where he claimed he had given up arms and even met Hafiz Saeed at the request of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who later appreciated his decision to follow non-violence.

Mehbooba Mufti on X urged Amit Shah to view Yasin Malik’s case humanely, noting that despite political differences, his choice to abandon violence for peaceful political engagement showed rare courage.

In her detailed letter, she described Malik as someone who once symbolized resistance but later chose restraint. She stressed that in 1994, Malik made the rare and difficult decision to lay down arms and follow peaceful political methods. Mehbooba said this transformation deserved acknowledgment, especially since he placed his trust in the state by rejecting militancy.

Yasin Malik is currently serving a life sentence in a terror funding case after conviction by the NIA court, which has now urged the High Court to award him the death penalty. He also faces trial for the killing of four IAF personnel, including Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, in Srinagar in 1990. Additionally, he is accused in the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of former Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Mehbooba’s appeal, however, focuses on his shift from violence to non-violence, urging the government to consider his case with empathy.
