New Zealand cricket star Suzie Bates is hopeful a training camp in Dubai will help the White Ferns adjust to the tough heat ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup, starting September 30 in India and Sri Lanka.
Bates, 38, is preparing for her fifth World Cup. She and her teammates arrived in Dubai this week, where they’ll play two unofficial warm-up games against England. Bates fondly recalled winning the T20 World Cup there last year and joked that if they win again, they might return to Dubai to celebrate.
“This is a special place for us,” said Bates. “It brings back great memories.”
Along with fellow veteran Sophie Devine, Bates will lead a mix of experience and youth. She praised rising stars like Eden Carson, Georgia Plimmer, and new left-arm seamer Bree Illing.
Bates reflected on how the women’s game has grown since her debut in 2009. “Back then it was amateur. Now it’s fully professional, and every team believes they can win,” she said.
Even after five World Cups, Bates remains excited. “I hope to share my experience and help the younger players enjoy their first one,” she added.
