Harry Kane inspired Bayern Munich to a 3-1 win over Chelsea in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night, while Paris Saint-Germain began their title defense with a dominant 4-0 victory against Atalanta.

At the Allianz Arena, Bayern took the lead when Trevoh Chalobah scored an own goal under pressure in the 20th minute. Soon after, Kane converted a penalty to make it 2-0. Chelsea quickly responded through Cole Palmer, who scored on his first start after injury. Despite Chelsea’s push, Bayern grew stronger in the second half. Robert Sanchez made key saves to keep Chelsea in the contest, but Kane struck again in the 63rd minute to seal the victory.

The double lifted Kane’s Champions League tally to 21 goals, making him only the third player after Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar to score 20 or more goals for two different clubs in the competition. “It was a tough game, but we stayed calm and made it difficult for them to press,” Kane said after the match.

Chelsea thought they had scored late when Palmer found the net again, but the effort was ruled offside. Despite their first defeat of the season, Palmer insisted Chelsea “deserved better.” For Bayern, the match also saw Manuel Neuer become their oldest player in the Champions League at 39.

Meanwhile in Paris, PSG impressed with a commanding performance. Marquinhos opened the scoring in the third minute before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes, and substitute Goncalo Ramos added goals. Despite Bradley Barcola missing a penalty, PSG cruised to victory. Coach Luis Enrique praised his side’s focus, saying they “produced a very good performance.”
