HC Cancels MLA Munirathna’s Petition

The Karnataka High Court has dismissed petitions filed by MLA Munirathna and three others seeking the quashing of a case of alleged gang rape against them, after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted its B-report to the designated trial court.

The petitions, filed at RMC Yard Police Station, were reviewed on Wednesday by a single-judge bench headed by Justice M.I. Arun. The accused—Munirathna, Vasanth Kumar, C. Channakeshava, and Kamal—had sought to have the case quashed. Special Public Prosecutor Pradeep, representing the SIT, informed the court that the B-report had been submitted and accepted by the trial court. Based on this, the bench allowed the petitions to be withdrawn and formally canceled them.

The original complaint was filed by a 40-year-old woman on June 11, 2023, alleging that she was assaulted by Munirathna and his associates, including being drugged and sexually assaulted. The state government had set up an SIT to investigate all cases against Munirathna, including the rape case registered at RMC Yard Police Station and other cases at Kaggalipura and Vyalikaval police stations related to caste insults and life threats.

The SIT conducted a thorough investigation, and its submission of the B-report to the trial court formed the basis for the High Court allowing the petitions to be withdrawn.
