Bengaluru’s long-awaited double-decker flyover at Silk Board Junction is nearing completion and is expected to open to traffic by the end of the year.
Bengaluru’s first double-decker flyover at the city’s Silk Board Junction is entering its final construction phase, with officials from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) indicating that operations could begin by December or early next year.
Construction teams are currently placing steel girders to link HSR Layout with BTM Layout, allowing vehicles to bypass the heavily congested ground-level traffic near Silk Board. Once the elevated stretch becomes operational, motorists from HSR will be able to exit at Ragigudda and proceed towards BTM Layout, significantly reducing travel time.
A section of the flyover connecting Ragigudda to Silk Board opened last year, providing partial relief in one direction. However, the reverse route was delayed by heavy traffic, restricted night-time work, and design changes. Initially slated to open in September, the HSR-to-BTM ramp faced further delays when engineers switched from concrete to steel girders for a crucial 42-metre segment to accommodate turning-radius challenges.
Traffic officials have cautioned that, despite the flyover’s opening, ground-level congestion will persist due to ongoing reliance on traffic signals below the junction.
Meanwhile, commuters at the newly launched Silk Board Metro Station on the Yellow Line have raised concerns about inadequate pedestrian infrastructure. Lack of proper footpaths connecting the Metro station to BMTC bus stops on Outer Ring Road has forced dangerous crossings, with commuters also complaining about unhygienic surroundings.
