The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) continues to play a key role in India’s journey towards a developed nation by 2047, said Amarendu Prakash, Chairman and Managing Director, SAIL, on Tuesday. Speaking at the company’s 53rd Annual General Meeting, he noted that SAIL is advancing its green steel initiatives through hydrogen-based steelmaking trials, carbon capture, biochar injection, and renewable energy projects, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and climate responsibility.
Prakash highlighted SAIL’s strong performance despite global challenges and outlined its strategic growth plans. “Steel is the backbone of modern civilization – resilient and enduring. Like steel, SAIL has been tested by challenges and strengthened by experience,” he remarked. Emphasizing the company’s contribution to nation-building, he stated that SAIL steel supports key sectors such as infrastructure, railways, defence, and energy, reinforcing its central role in India’s development.
Guided by the National Steel Policy 2017, SAIL’s upcoming projects will focus on green technologies, efficient logistics, customer-centric solutions, digitalization, and sustainability, all anchored by skilled personnel.
Prakash also underlined SAIL’s support to the defence sector, supplying around 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for India’s advanced frontline warships, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri. This contribution strengthens defence self-reliance, reduces imports, and aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
“Climate change is a defining challenge, and SAIL is committed to leading the green transition. With our resilience, capability, and vision, we are ready to achieve greater heights,” he added, reaffirming the Maharatna company’s role as a cornerstone of India’s growth and a pioneer in sustainable steelmaking.
