Jammu and Kashmir MLA Tanvir Sadiq has highlighted the severe economic impact of the Pahalgam terror attack on the region’s tourism sector, estimating losses in the hundreds of crores. Speaking at the Kerala Urban Conclave in Kochi, Sadiq explained that the attack led to mass cancellations, forcing hotels and tourism businesses to slash prices drastically. For instance, a Gulmarg hotel that normally charged ₹70,000 per night reduced its rates to ₹20,000 following the incident, reflecting the severe financial strain on the sector.

Sadiq stressed that restoring statehood is crucial to rebuilding tourist confidence and ensuring comprehensive governance. He pointed out the challenges posed by the Union Territory’s dual power structure, with the Lieutenant Governor overseeing the Home department while the Chief Minister manages other affairs, creating inefficiencies in local administration. “Kashmir cannot afford dual policies,” he remarked, underlining the need for full local control to streamline decision-making and foster development.

The MLA also cited the Supreme Court’s support for statehood restoration and the high voter turnout in recent elections as evidence of the people’s mandate, urging the Central Government to act swiftly, especially with the Court’s scheduled hearing on October 8.

On security efforts, Sadiq praised the local community’s response, noting that Kashmiri residents condemned the attack and welcomed tourists, demonstrating resilience and hospitality. He also acknowledged the Chief Minister’s outreach initiatives and the successful completion of this year’s Amarnath Yatra. Despite these positive steps, Sadiq admitted that tourism is still recovering and urged immediate action to fully revive the industry.
