Julia Roberts’ film opens San Diego festival


The San Diego International Film Festival will open on October 15 with After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield. The film is directed by Luka Guadagnino and sets the tone for a five-day event that ends on October 19.

This year, the festival received a record-breaking 3,500 submissions and will showcase 24 world premieres from 29 countries. Notable films in the Gala and Narrative Competition include Hamnet by Chloe Zhao, Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser, and Omaha by Cole Webley. Other major titles are Rebuilding, Fantasy Life, Outerland, Caper, and For Worse.

The festival also features a strong international section. It has partnered with the House of Pacific Relations in Balboa Park, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary and represents 35 cultures.

Additional standout films include 100 Liters of Gold, Case 137, Hello Mother, Lost in Territories, Magic Hour, Obraz, Sunphlowers, and The Party’s Over.

Documentaries include A Quiet Love, Ugo: An Artist at War, and Lights, Camera, Friendship on the Spectrum.

The San Diego Scene sidebar will present local stories, including Code Red, The Last Ones Out, and The Truth About Susie.
