Three killed, dozens injured in Mexico gas blast

Mexico City

Three people were killed and more than 50 others injured after a gas tanker truck exploded on Zaragoza road under the Concordia bridge in Mexico City on late Wednesday afternoon.

Clara Brugada Molina, head of government of the Mexican capital, confirmed the accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. local time when a tanker with a 49,500-litre capacity overturned. At least 18 vehicles were damaged in the explosion. Nineteen of the injured remain in serious condition, while others have been transferred to hospitals across the city.

Authorities have cordoned off the area, with police enforcing roadblocks both to protect nearby residents and preserve the site for investigation. Officials are now working to determine the exact cause of the tanker’s overturning and subsequent blast.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the victims’ families, writing on X: “We express our solidarity and support to the families of three people who unfortunately passed away and to the injured.” She added that multiple agencies — including the National Guard, Civil Protection, and Defence Secretariat — are coordinating with city authorities to provide medical care and emergency assistance.

Sheinbaum also praised the emergency services for their swift response. Teams worked to control the blaze, assist survivors, and secure the area against further danger.

The explosion in Iztapalapa has reignited safety concerns around hazardous cargo transport through urban areas. Investigators are expected to review both road safety standards and tanker maintenance practices as part of the probe.
