Principal District and Sessions Judge Manjunath Nayak on Thursday emphasized the importance of public support in safeguarding forests and wildlife. Speaking at the National Forest Martyrs’ Day-2025 programme organized by the Karnataka Forest Department, he said, “Law alone cannot protect forest and wildlife wealth. Public cooperation is equally vital, and we should all cultivate an attitude of conserving our natural resources.”

Justice Nayak paid tribute to the forest officers who sacrificed their lives while protecting the country’s forest and wildlife wealth. He noted that 20 officers had been martyred in the last decade and expressed concern that despite technological advancements, such tragedies continue. He urged the forest department to enhance the use of technology and train investigating officers to reduce risks.

Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde lauded the initiative to honour the martyrs and highlighted the critical role of the forest department in protecting national resources. Chief Conservator of Forests KT Hanumanthappa described forest officers as an “army of the country” safeguarding nature, while Hegde stressed the importance of caution and safety in their duties.

Additional speakers included Manoj Rajan, Additional Chief Conservation Officer of the Elephant Project, and Deputy Conservator of Forests Dr GR Ajjayiah. The event was attended by Zilla Panchayat CEO N Hemanth, DCF Prasanna Krishna Patagar, and officials from the police and forest departments.
