MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed government received reports of Indians recently recruited as support staff in Russia.

India on Thursday firmly asked Russia to end the practice of recruiting Indian nationals into its military and demanded the immediate release of those currently serving in Russian units. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also reiterated its advisory cautioning Indians against joining the Russian armed forces, stressing the “inherent risks and dangers” involved.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, responding to media queries, confirmed that the government has received reports of fresh recruitment of Indians as support staff by Russian military units. “The government has on several occasions over the past year underlined the risks in this course of action and cautioned Indian citizens accordingly,” Jaiswal said.
He added that New Delhi has taken up the matter with Russian authorities both in Moscow and through the Russian embassy in Delhi, pressing for an end to the practice. “We are also in touch with the families of the affected Indian citizens,” Jaiswal noted.
India’s concerns primarily relate to nationals being recruited as support staff—such as cooks, helpers, and other logistical roles—but deployed in conflict zones. Reports in recent months suggested that some Indians had been trapped in combat situations despite assurances of non-combat duties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue during his visit to Russia last year, seeking the release of Indians serving in such capacities.
“We once again strongly urge all Indian nationals to stay away from any offers to join the Russian army,” Jaiswal emphasised.
