Forest Martyrs’ Day
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday emphasized the vital importance of forest conservation for the survival of humanity while addressing the National Forest Martyrs’ Day program. Paying tribute to those who laid down their lives protecting forests, the Chief Minister said their sacrifice must always be remembered as a reminder of the collective duty to safeguard natural resources.
Highlighting the state’s rich biodiversity, Siddaramaiah noted that Karnataka holds a leading position in terms of wildlife wealth. He stressed that ensuring adequate food and water within forests is crucial to preventing human-wildlife conflicts. If the green cover expands, forest wealth will also grow, benefiting both people and nature, he remarked.
The Chief Minister outlined measures being implemented to reduce conflicts, particularly those involving elephants. He directed officials to construct and maintain railway barricades to prevent animal intrusions into human settlements. He assured that while the Forest Department has sufficient funds, the government is prepared to extend further financial support if required.
Siddaramaiah also urged senior officials to spend more time in forest areas, observing that their presence would encourage frontline staff to remain committed to their duties in challenging terrains. The government, he said, is determined to adopt a proactive approach that balances conservation with community welfare.
Officials at the event stated that the program not only honored the memory of forest martyrs but also reaffirmed Karnataka’s commitment to sustainable forest management and harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
