Sonam Wangchuk leads Leh fast

New Delhi

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and the Leh Apex Body announced a 35-day fast in Leh on Wednesday, demanding statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion under the Constitution’s Sixth Schedule. The protest follows a two-month pause in talks with the Union Home Ministry, which Wangchuk said has ignored their repeated requests for a meeting.

Wangchuk emphasized that the fast is peaceful and non-violent, aiming to highlight constitutional demands. He also reminded the ruling BJP of its earlier promise to grant Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh ahead of upcoming Hill Council elections.

The activist added that Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 would mark a significant moment in their protest. Wangchuk stressed that the movement seeks both protection for Ladakh and recognition of its political rights, and the fasting demonstration is a step to intensify pressure on the Centre to respond to their longstanding demands.
