Scindia Unveils UPI–UPU Integration at Universal Postal Congress

India has launched the UPI–UPU integration to make cross-border remittances faster, cheaper, and more inclusive through the global postal network.

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday launched the UPI–UPU Integration project at the 28th Universal Postal Congress, marking a significant step in transforming cross-border remittances.

The initiative, developed jointly by India’s Department of Posts (DoP), NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), and the Universal Postal Union (UPU), connects India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the UPU’s Interconnection Platform. This integration combines the reliability of the global postal network with the affordability and speed of UPI, enabling families worldwide to transfer money more quickly, securely, and at lower costs.

Scindia highlighted India’s commitment to innovation, announcing $10 million in financial support for advancing technology in e-commerce and digital payments. He stressed that India’s vision for the postal sector is rooted in inclusivity and modernization—leveraging AI, machine learning, DigiPIN, and data-driven logistics while delivering affordable digital financial services for migrants and small enterprises.

Showcasing India’s progress under Digital India and the goal of Viksit Bharat, he pointed out that India Post Payments Bank, Aadhaar, and Jan Dhan initiatives have enabled over 560 million accounts, most in women’s names, and facilitated the delivery of more than 900 million letters and parcels last year.

Scindia also announced India’s candidature for the UPU’s Council of Administration and Postal Operations Council, reinforcing its role as a global partner. He concluded by emphasizing India’s belief in resilience, trust, and interoperable solutions to build a seamless and inclusive global postal and payments ecosystem.
