IMD predicts heavy rains, thunderstorms; CM Gupta oversees relief efforts

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday directed officials to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the Yamuna water levels and ensure swift safety and relief measures for residents affected by flooding in low-lying areas. Following an online meeting with all District Magistrates, she stressed that 24×7 vigilance must continue, relief work should not slacken, and the safety of every Delhi resident is the highest priority. The government team is fully alert and prepared for all situations.

At 7 a.m. on Friday, the Yamuna at Delhi’s Old Railway Bridge measured 207.33 metres, slightly down from 207.35 metres an hour earlier. By 8 a.m., it receded further to 207.31 metres, giving hope for temporary relief. On Thursday, the river reached 207.48 metres, the season’s highest, marking the fifth time since 1963 that it crossed 207 metres.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast moderate rainfall with normal cloud cover in Delhi on Friday. Heavy rains with thunder and lightning are expected on September 6 and 7, followed by brief relief on September 8. Torrential downpours may return on September 9, while skies are likely to be partly cloudy on September 10. Temperatures are expected to remain between 34–35°C during the day and 23–25°C at night.

Earlier this week, CM Gupta visited flood relief camps near Geeta Colony Flyover and the Old Iron Bridge, reviewing water levels and meeting families affected by the floods. She assured them of full assistance and instructed authorities to provide uninterrupted access to essentials, including drinking water, food, medical care, and safe shelter. Emphasizing the government’s constant vigilance, she urged citizens not to panic, while officials continue working tirelessly to manage the situation and mitigate the impact of the floods.
