Bengaluru clears ₹9,700-crore metro expansion plan

Bengaluru to Revolutionize Commute with Innovative Double-Decker Metro Corridors

The Karnataka Cabinet has given its nod to the much-awaited Namma Metro Phase 3 project, approving a ₹9,700-crore double-decker viaduct that promises to reshape urban connectivity.

According to the plan, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) will construct elevated metro tracks stacked above flyovers along two major corridors. The first corridor, stretching 28.486 km from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura via the western arc of the Outer Ring Road, will become the city’s longest flyover. The second corridor, extending 8.635 km from Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road, will also feature a double-decker design. In total, the project will add 37.121 km of double-decker viaducts to the city’s transport network.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil stated that the approved cost covers land acquisition, civil works, and design. While the Union government will finance the metro component, the state will shoulder half of the flyover expenditure, with 10% coming from urban local bodies and the rest raised through loans.

Originally planned at 44.65 km, the double-decker stretch has been trimmed, though some flyovers, such as the Delmia Junction structure, may be demolished to accommodate the new design. Existing flyovers along the ORR are likely to be repurposed.

Tendering for civil works and stations will begin later this month, with bids finalised by November. Groundwork is expected to start in January 2026, and a single contractor will oversee both metro and flyover construction. Phase 3, earlier estimated at ₹15,611 crore, is now projected for completion by May 2031—one year later than planned and at a 5% higher cost.
