Ajit Pawar Clarifies Row Over Rebuking IPS Officer

New Delhi

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday clarified his role after a video went viral showing him allegedly rebuking a woman IPS officer over a phone call, sparking widespread social media outrage. Pawar said his intention was never to interfere with law enforcement but to ensure that the situation on the ground remained calm and did not escalate further.

My attention has been drawn to certain videos circulating regarding my interaction with police officials in Solapur, Pawar wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He added that he holds the highest respect for our police force and its officers, including women officers who serve with distinction and courage, and emphasized that he values the rule of law above all.

Pawar reiterated his commitment to transparent governance, stating that every illegal activity, including sand mining, would be dealt with strictly according to the law.

The controversy arose after a clip showed Sub-Divisional Police Officer Anjali Krishna allegedly being rebuked by Pawar. When the officer tried to confirm his identity, Pawar sarcastically asked, Will you be able to recognise my face if I make a video call?

NCP state president Sunil Tatkare defended Pawar, alleging the video was leaked deliberately. He said, He asked the officer to defer action due to law and order issues. This happens while dealing with bureaucracy, and there was nothing wrong in what he said or did. Tatkare described Pawar as known for straight talk, underscoring that the remarks were not inappropriate.
