Statewide Inclusive Survey Launched

CM Siddaramaiah Flags Off First-Ever Survey on Sexual Minorities and Former Devadasi Women

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday launched two landmark initiatives aimed at addressing the socio-economic challenges of marginalized communities in Karnataka. At a ceremony held in Vidhana Soudha, the CM unveiled the posters marking the beginning of the first-ever baseline survey of sexual minorities across the state, along with a resurvey of former Devadasi women in 15 districts.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Karnataka State Women Development Corporation. Officials stated that the surveys will collect accurate data on the social and economic status of the communities, enabling the government to design rehabilitation and welfare programs tailored to their needs.

This is the first time such a comprehensive effort is being undertaken at the state level. The data will help us understand the real challenges faced by these groups and extend meaningful support, Siddaramaiah said while addressing the gathering.

Women Development Corporation Chairperson Padmavati, Principal Secretary Dr. Shyamala Iqbal, Managing Director Mahesh Babu, senior officials, and representatives from sexual minority groups were present at the event.

The resurvey of former Devadasi women is expected to provide updated insights into their living conditions and requirements, many years after initial rehabilitation schemes were introduced. Meanwhile, the baseline survey of sexual minorities is seen as a step toward recognition, inclusivity, and targeted welfare.

Officials emphasized that the findings will be crucial for framing effective policies to ensure social justice, economic empowerment, and dignity for these historically marginalized groups.
