Electric pole falls on BMTC bus, causes traffic congestion

Traffic in the eastern part of the city was disrupted on Thursday after an electric pole fell on a BMTC bus near Varthur College. The incident, which occurred in the afternoon, led to long traffic snarls on the stretch connecting Varthur College to Gunjur.

According to eyewitnesses, the pole collapsed suddenly, hitting the bus and causing panic among passengers. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported, though commuters experienced significant delays. Police and BESCOM officials rushed to the spot to clear the road and restore normalcy. As a safety measure, traffic police diverted vehicles to nearby alternative routes. Despite these efforts, movement remained slow for several hours, particularly during the evening rush. Officials urged motorists to exercise caution while passing through the stretch and advised them to use alternate roads wherever possible. The fallen pole was later removed with the help of cranes, and BESCOM engineers worked to restore power supply to the affected area. By late evening, traffic gradually returned to normal. The incident highlighted the urgent need for better monitoring of aging infrastructure, especially in busy residential and commercial corridors like Varthur. Authorities assured that measures would be taken to prevent such disruptions in the future
