New Delhi

Veteran Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket, closing a career that spanned more than 25 years. Known for his sharp variations and control, Mishra became one of India’s most respected spin bowlers.

He represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, taking 76, 64, and 16 wickets respectively. His international journey began in 2003 with an ODI debut in Bangladesh. In 2008, he made his Test debut against Australia in Mohali, claiming a memorable five-wicket haul. Mishra’s standout moments include equalling Javagal Srinath’s record of 18 wickets in a bilateral ODI series against Zimbabwe in 2013, and his strong performance in the 2014 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh, where he picked 10 wickets as India finished runners-up.

Although his last international appearance came in 2017, Mishra remained active in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League. His final competitive match was for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024. He finishes as the seventh-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, with 174 wickets in 162 matches. He also holds the unique record of three IPL hat-tricks, achieved with three different teams: Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Kings XI Punjab in 2011, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.

Announcing his retirement, Mishra thanked the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, teammates, family, and fans for their constant support. He said his decision was influenced by recurring injuries and his desire to give opportunities to the next generation of cricketers.

Looking ahead, Mishra plans to remain connected with the game through coaching, commentary, mentoring young players, and interacting with fans on social media.
