Tejasvi Surya urges airfreight for metro

Tejasvi Surya urges swift action to prevent delays in metro project delivery.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has urged the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to take immediate steps to ensure timely delivery of trains for the Yellow Line Metro by opting for airfreight of key components.

In a statement shared on social media, Surya revealed that he held a detailed discussion with the Managing Director of Titagarh, the company responsible for supplying trains. According to him, the manufacturer is ready to deliver up to eight trains by September 30, but the bogies required for the rakes still need to be supplied by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC).

While most other materials are in place, the delay in receiving bogies threatens to stall the project. Surya highlighted that shipping the bogies by sea could result in a 30–45 day delay, whereas airfreighting two trains’ worth of bogies would ensure delivery on schedule.

He stressed that the cost of delay would far outweigh the expenses of airfreight, given the financial and social impact of late metro operations. “Timely delivery will not only save money but also ease commuter life and generate additional revenue. Delay, on the other hand, will only add to costs,” he remarked. Surya added that he has already urged BMRCL to press CRRC for urgent action. He emphasized that accelerating the delivery process is crucial for Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding metro network and for addressing the city’s growing traffic challenges.
