Seattle Sounders claim first Leagues Cup crown

Inter Miami missed chances despite Suárez’s assists; Seattle controlled the final moments, ending Miami’s hopes

Seattle Sounders FC created history by winning their first-ever Leagues Cup title, defeating Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami 3-0 in the final at Lumen Field. With this victory, Seattle became the only Major League Soccer (MLS) team to capture every major North American soccer trophy. Their collection already includes four US Open Cups, two MLS Cups, one Concacaf Champions Cup, and one Supporters’ Shield.

The breakthrough came in the 26th minute when Osaze De Rosario powered a header from Paul Rothrock’s cross into the far corner. In the 84th minute, Alex Roldan doubled the lead by calmly converting a penalty after Georgi Minoungou was fouled. Just minutes later, Rothrock sealed the match with a precise strike in the 89th minute.

Inter Miami had their chances but failed to convert. Luis Suárez set up openings for Messi and Tadeo Allende, but neither could find the back of the net. Miami, winners of the 2023 edition, saw their hopes end as Seattle controlled the final moments.

The Sounders’ triumph adds to their growing reputation, achieved before a record crowd at Lumen Field. Beyond the trophy, the win grants Seattle automatic qualification to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16.

Seattle’s Leagues Cup journey was marked by dominance, including a 16-2 goal difference despite injuries and suspensions. They were also the only team across MLS and Liga MX to secure maximum points in the group stage.

After their historic success, Seattle will now turn focus back to domestic league action, resuming MLS competition against LA Galaxy on September 13.
