Govt reshuffles officers across Bengaluru bodies

Restructuring aims to enhance accountability, streamline civic services, and improve coordination across Bengaluru.

The Karnataka Urban Development Department (UDD) has ordered a major reshuffle of senior officers in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), redistributing them between the newly formed Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and five corporations. The reallocation is set to come into effect from September 2.

The BBMP, whichh earlier had 16 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers, two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, 19 Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) officers, and one Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), will now see these officials divided between the GBA and the corporations. According to the order, this restructuring is aimed at ensuring smoother administration, decentralisation of governance, and better delivery of civic services across the expanding city.

Officials stated that the move is in line with the government’s decision to strengthen the GBA, which will act as the umbrella body overseeing urban planning, infrastructure, and large-scale developmental works. The five corporations carved out under the new system will handle ward-level and local issues, allowing for more responsive governance.

The redistributions of officers is expected to address long-standing complaints about inefficiency and delays in civic projects under the BBMP. By spreading administrative responsibilities, the government hopes to bring greater accountability and improve coordination between agencies. While the official order is being welcomed in some quarters as a step toward streamlined governance, critics argue that the restructuring may also dilute BBMP’s authority and lead to overlapping roles. The impact of the reshuffle will become clearer once the officers assume their new positions from Tuesday.
