CBI raids Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh

A week after raiding TMC MLA Sudipta Roy, CBI probed hospital fund embezzlement linked to a doctor’s murder; ex-principal Sandip Ghosh is jailed

Kolkata
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided the residence of Kolkata Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh in connection with alleged financial irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Ghosh, also a Trinamool Congress MLA, was questioned at his Shyambazar home while central security forces stood guard outside.

The raid comes a week after similar action against Trinamool MLA Sudipta Roy, whose house and nursing home were searched by the agency. The corruption probe stems from last year’s rape and murder of a young doctor at R.G. Kar, which triggered widespread protests. Investigators allege that hospital funds were embezzled, leading the Calcutta High Court to order a CBI probe. Former principal Sandip Ghosh has already been arrested and is in jail.

Sources said Atin Ghosh’s name appeared multiple times in the investigation, prompting the agency to question him. Senior CBI officials, including the chief investigating officer, were present during Friday’s search. Officials had informed Ghosh in advance that he would be questioned.

Trinamool leaders have dismissed the action as politically motivated. Party spokesperson Tanmay Ghosh alleged that the BJP was using central agencies to harass its opponents ahead of elections. “People are tired of this drama. The CBI has been investigating for a year without results,” he said.

The case remains under investigation, with the agency probing a “larger conspiracy” behind the crime. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, convicted of the doctor’s murder, has already been sentenced to life imprisonment. However, the financial corruption angle continues to widen, keeping political tensions high in West Bengal.
