Amit Shah predicts Congress defeat in Assam

Shah said BJP’s growth, pride, and stability left Congress with no ground in Assam for 2026

Guwahati
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday declared that the Congress will be “wiped out” in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, claiming the party has lost all relevance in the state. Speaking at the Panchayat Representatives’ Conclave in Guwahati, Shah quipped that “even with binoculars, Congress will not be visible” when the elections arrive.

The conclave witnessed a gathering of nearly 20,000 newly elected panchayat representatives, which Shah described as proof of the BJP-led government’s strong grassroots connect. During his address, the Home Minister sought blessings at Maa Kamakhya temple and paid tribute to Assam’s legendary icons, including Lachit Borphukan, Bir Chilarai, Kanaklata Barua, and Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika.

Shah credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing what he called “transformative change” in Assam during the last 11 years. He highlighted the Centre’s role in giving national recognition to Assam’s cultural heritage, such as according status to the Sattriya dance, honouring Srimanta Sankardev, and celebrating the 400th birth anniversary of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan in Delhi in 2022.

According to Shah, these initiatives have placed Assam’s culture at the national stage while development projects have boosted the state’s growth. He projected BJP’s governance as both culturally enriching and development-oriented, claiming it has created a “win-win situation” for the people of Assam.

Framing the BJP as the dominant force, Shah said the mix of growth, cultural pride, and political stability has consolidated the party’s leadership in Assam. He asserted that with such momentum, Congress has no political ground left in the state ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
