The doctor’s family petitioned in December for a fresh probe; two related cases remain under review
Kolkata
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday declined to hear a fresh petition demanding further investigation into the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, presiding over the single-judge bench, stated that since the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the case’s convict, Sanjay Roy, have already filed appeals being heard by a division bench, the new plea should also be taken up there.
On Wednesday, Justice Ghosh had asked the victim’s family lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, to consult with the family. On Thursday, the lawyer informed the court that the family had no objection to the petition being heard by the division bench headed by Justice Debangshu Basak, where related matters are already pending. Following this, Justice Ghosh said he would drop the case and forward the documents to the Chief Justice.
The petition, filed by the doctor’s family in December last year, had sought a fresh probe into the crime. Currently, two connected cases remain under consideration before the division bench.
The case had shaken the nation when, on August 9 last year, the trainee doctor’s body was discovered in a seminar hall of RG Kar hospital. The brutal incident triggered widespread protests across India, involving doctors, citizens, and women’s groups.
Main accused Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was convicted and handed a life sentence. He is presently serving his term, even as appeals and fresh petitions continue in court.
