She emphasized protecting workers’ livelihoods and pledged full support to maintain export growth amid global challenges

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has assured Indian exporters that the government will stand firmly with them as the U.S. imposes steep tariffs on Indian goods. Speaking to a delegation of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) on Thursday, she stressed that workers’ livelihoods must be protected and promised comprehensive support to sustain export growth despite global trade pressures.
The FIEO delegation, led by President S.C. Ralhan, highlighted exporters’ concerns over the U.S. tariff hike, which raises duties on many categories to 50 percent. The move affects nearly 55 percent of India’s exports to America—worth about $47–48 billion—making them less competitive compared to rivals from China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and other Asian countries.
Ralhan said the higher tariffs pose serious risks to market access, competitiveness, and employment. Labour-intensive sectors like textiles, seafood, leather, ceramics, and handicrafts are expected to be the hardest hit. He called for quick and calibrated policy steps to shield exporters from these shocks.
Sitharaman reassured the industry that the government will explore all possible measures to protect exporters’ interests and ensure India remains resilient in international trade. She urged business leaders to reassure workers about job continuity even in the face of uncertainty.
Ralhan welcomed her commitment, calling it a major confidence boost for exporters. He said the assurance shows the government’s priority in safeguarding India’s trade interests and employment. The FIEO also pledged to work closely with the government to diversify markets and strengthen India’s global trade position.
The additional 25 percent U.S. duty—effective from Friday—comes as a major setback for Indian exporters already navigating global headwinds.
