School children injured as building lintel collapses

Three students sustained serious injuries when a window lintel collapsed at the Government Boys Higher Primary School in Kote, Devanahalli town. The building, constructed under Bharat Electronics Limited’s (BEL) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, has now come under scrutiny after the incident prompted a formal complaint from the school headmaster against the company.

According to school authorities, the collapse occurred during class hours, injuring three boys. One student suffered a fractured leg, while the others sustained multiple injuries. The victims were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. While one student was admitted to Hosmat Hospital and another transferred to Victoria Hospital, the third, initially treated at Bowring Hospital, has since been discharged.

The alarming Incident has raised concerns over the quality and safety of infrastructure built under CSR programs. Parents and local residents expressed outrage, questioning how a recently constructed building could fail so quickly. “These are children’s lives at stake. Such negligence cannot be tolerated,” said a parent outside the school.

School Education and Literacy Minister S. Madhu Bangarappa visited the injured students and assured strict action. “An inquiry will be conducted to determine accountability, and necessary measures will be taken to ensure school buildings are safe for children,” he said. Officials confirmed that engineers will inspect the building to assess its structural stability. Meanwhile, the case highlights the urgent need for stringent monitoring of CSR-led construction projects, particularly in the education sector, where student safety is paramount.
