PM Modi to meet Japan’s Ishiba for first bilateral talks
New Delhi
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Japan will serve as an important step to strengthen India-Japan ties and launch new initiatives. Speaking at a special briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs on the Prime Minister’s visits to Japan and China, Misri said the trip will enhance resilience in the relationship and open fresh avenues of cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. He added that the visit would reaffirm both nations’ shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and stability.
Misri explained that the annual India-Japan summit always includes engagements outside Tokyo, and this year’s program also features such a visit. PM Modi will hold talks with top Japanese leaders, interact with Friends of India, and participate in a business leaders’ forum involving leading industry representatives from both nations. These discussions are expected to boost cooperation in trade, investment, and technology.
Highlighting growing state-level exchanges, Misri said a dedicated session on India-Japan prefectural partnerships has been planned, reflecting the increasing collaboration between Indian states and Japanese prefectures. Overall, he stressed, the visit will consolidate the longstanding friendship and pave the way for stronger economic and political cooperation between the two countries.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced on Tuesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Japan and China from August 29 to September 1. Modi will be in Japan on August 29-30 to attend the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. This marks his first summit with Ishiba and his eighth visit to Japan. The leaders will review their Special Strategic and Global Partnership, focusing on defence, trade, technology, and cultural exchanges, while also discussing key regional and global issues.
In the second leg, PM Modi will travel to Tianjin, China, on August 31 to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. He is also expected to hold bilateral talks with other attending leaders. India, a member of the SCO since 2017, hosted the presidency in 2022-23. The visit is aimed at strengthening India’s regional and global partnerships.
