Borussia Dortmund extends Niko Kovac’s contract until 2027

Kovac commits to long-term project as Dortmund aims for sustained success

Dortmund
Eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund have announced the extension of head coach Niko Kovac’s contract until June 30, 2027. The Bundesliga club confirmed the news on Tuesday, rewarding the 53-year-old coach, who took over in January this year on an 18-month deal when BVB were struggling at 11th place in the league standings.

Kovac, a decorated former player with titles including the DFB-Pokal, Bundesliga, and Club World Cup, guided Dortmund to a remarkable turnaround, securing a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Reflecting on the progress, Kovac said, We have made a lot of progress together in the last six months to get Borussia Dortmund back on track on the pitch. We sense a high level of trust in us as coaches, and we feel that we can achieve something special here together with the club and the fans.

Highlighting his vision for the future, he added, The conversations we’ve had over the past few weeks reinforced my belief that, building on our achievements, we can deliver long-term success. Our goal is to help Borussia return to where it used to be — through hard work, clear-sighted decisions, and enjoying what we do.

Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl welcomed the extension, calling it a crucial step for the club’s stability. Having that certainty is important for everyone as we face the challenges ahead, Kehl said. Our aim is to be as successful as possible. Niko and his staff embody conviction, intensity, and passion, and we’re confident this partnership will continue to bring results.
