HDMC Streetlights Upgrade

HDMC’s Energy-Efficient Streetlight Project Gets Approval

Hubballi

The Hubballi Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has officially approved its long-awaited energy-efficient streetlight project. The initiative will replace conventional streetlights across the twin cities with energy-saving LED lights and introduce a Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS) to manage the streetlight network in real time.

The project will be executed over a seven-year concession period through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with a total sanctioned cost of Rs 93.6 crore. The decision came after extensive deliberations led by the HDMC Commissioner and strong support from the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA). Following a detailed financial evaluation, the contract was awarded to Tumakuru-based Shri Manju Electricals, the L1 bidder, with an Equated Monthly Instalment (EMI) of Rs 1.1 crore, inclusive of taxes.

The project is expected to transform the city’s infrastructure by cutting energy consumption and reducing streetlight maintenance costs. LED technology will improve street lighting quality, ensuring better visibility and safety for residents and commuters.

Executive Engineer SM Ganachari stated that the project would be implemented within a few weeks, with formalities with the contractor completed soon. Currently, HDMC spends over Rs 2 crore monthly on electricity for streetlights, which will be reduced by Rs 1 crore, in addition to savings on maintenance costs. He added that the project aligns with broader goals of energy efficiency and sustainability.
