Bengaluru Cyber Fraud

Cyber scam targets Bengaluru traffic fine payers

City residents are being warned about a recent cyber scam targeting those paying traffic fines online. A Bengaluru tech professional lost ₹2.65 lakh after falling victim to a fraudulent link sent by cybercriminals claiming to facilitate payment of traffic penalties.

The incident occurred when the victim received a message containing an APK file and a link, purportedly to check pending fines and pay them online. Trusting the message, the individual opened the link, and within minutes, the entire amount in their bank account was siphoned off by the attackers. The case has been reported at Kodigehalli Police Station, where authorities are investigating the cyber theft.

Traffic authorities have recently offered a 50% concession for fines paid between August 23 and September 12. The initiative, aimed at clearing long-pending penalties, applies only to violations within Bengaluru. Cybercriminals are reportedly exploiting this window by sending fraudulent messages and APK files to vehicle owners, claiming they can pay fines or check balances online.

Police advise the public to be cautious and avoid opening unknown links or files related to fine payments. Legitimate payments must be made through official channels only. Residents are urged to verify any communication with the traffic police before taking action.

The city police have emphasized ongoing awareness campaigns to educate citizens on safe online practices, especially during periods of high fine payments. Authorities continue to monitor cybercrime trends and warn that similar scams may target unsuspecting individuals in the future. Vigilance and adherence to official payment portals remain crucial to prevent further financial losses.
