Shivakumar clarifies reciting RSS anthem move

Stampede Debate in Assembly Sparks Heated Exchange Between Congress, BJP Leaders

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Friday clarified that his decision to recite a portion of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) anthem in the Assembly was not a political statement but an assertion of his understanding of the organisation. Addressing media speculation about his political leanings, Shivakumar firmly stated, “I am a born Congressman and will continue to lead the Congress.”

The controversy began during a debate on the recent stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium, when BJP leader R. Ashoka accused the government of negligence. In response, Shivakumar recited lines from the RSS anthem, prompting speculation about his political intent. Explaining his actions later, the Deputy CM said, “As a leader, I must know my opponents as well as my friends. I have studied the RSS and its history. They are building institutions across Karnataka and influencing children. Politically, we have many differences, but the BJP should know I have gone very deep into their workings.”

Shivakumar also defended the government’s handling of the Chinnaswamy incident, admitting mistakes but stressing that swift action was taken. He pointed out that such stampedes have occurred at large gatherings elsewhere, including religious congregations. “I am a cricket fan and a member of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. Some mistake happened, but the government responded immediately,” he said.Ashoka, however, demanded accountability from both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, questioning the decision to grant permission for the celebrations that led to overcrowding. The exchange added a dramatic twist to the Assembly proceedings, highlighting ongoing political sparring between the Congress and BJP.
