SC Takes Up Case Against MP Patel Property Case

Hasan

The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of a petition alleging that Lok Sabha MP Shreyas Patel concealed property details. The petition, filed ahead of the elections, claims that Patel failed to disclose high-value properties in Bangalore registered under his grandfather, former MP G. Puttaswamigowda, despite having paid taxes on them prior to the polls.

Following the Supreme Court’s directions, lawyer Purnachandra Tejaswi personally affixed a notice at Patel’s office in the DC building, instructing him to appear before the Court on October 6 for hearings. However, Patel reportedly left the office without acknowledging the notice, prompting the lawyer to voice strong disapproval, saying the young MP should respect the law and court directives.

The case draws parallels with a previous instance where former MP Prajwal Revanna was disqualified over non-disclosure of assets. The petition, initially dismissed by the High Court, was refiled in the Supreme Court, which has now agreed to hear it. The JDS party has also lodged a complaint seeking Patel’s disqualification over the alleged concealment.

The lawyer emphasized that MPs are expected to uphold legal and ethical standards and that ignoring court notices undermines the judicial process. The Supreme Court will now examine the petition and determine whether further legal action, including potential disqualification, is warranted.

This case underscores ongoing scrutiny of asset declarations by public representatives and reinforces the judiciary’s role in ensuring accountability.
