OpenAI to Set Up First Office in India, Begin Hiring

OpenAI is set to expand into India with its first office in New Delhi and a local hiring drive to strengthen its AI presence

New Delhi

OpenAI has officially established its India unit and will open its first office in New Delhi later this year, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the global AI landscape.

CEO Sam Altman said India is uniquely positioned to lead in AI, citing strong tech talent, a robust developer ecosystem, and government backing through the IndiaAI Mission. “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important step in making advanced AI more accessible across the country and creating AI for India, and with India,” Altman noted.

India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market by users and one of the fastest growing globally. ChatGPT’s weekly active users in India have quadrupled in the past year, with the country ranking among the top five developer markets and hosting the largest student base worldwide.

The new India team will focus on partnerships with government, businesses, developers, and academia. OpenAI is also tailoring its offerings for Indian users, including ChatGPT Go, an affordable ₹399/month subscription with UPI integration, and OpenAI Academy, a nationwide AI literacy initiative with the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Enhanced Indic language support in GPT-5 and a new “Study Mode” are also being rolled out.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI’s presence, calling it a boost to India’s AI ecosystem. OpenAI will host its first Education Summit this month and a Developer Day later this year, alongside active hiring for local roles.
