Errani and Vavassori remained composed in tiebreak, defeating Swiatek and Ruud to claim $1 million
New York
Italian duo Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori successfully defended their US Open mixed doubles crown, defeating Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in a thrilling final at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The victory marked their third mixed doubles title as a pair, following wins in New York last year and at Roland Garros earlier this summer.
“It was amazing. The atmosphere was crazy. The last match was unbelievable, with so many highlights,” said Vavassori. Errani, ranked No. 291 in singles, echoed the joy: “I’m so happy. It was so special to win here again. Andrea gave me so much energy, especially after losing the second set.”
The Italians had not dropped a set all tournament until Swiatek and Ruud rallied late in the second set. But in the match tiebreak, Errani and Vavassori stayed firm and never trailed, sealing the win and earning USD 1 million in prize money.
A standout moment came on championship point when Errani attempted an underarm serve, a tactic she has used before on big stages, including the Olympic semifinals. Though the point was lost, it surprised opponents and entertained the crowd. “Sometimes I feel if I serve normal, I’ll do a double fault. So I just try it. It’s not easy to return,” she explained with a smile.
The duo’s chemistry shone throughout, with Errani joking that they “invented” the trick serve last year. For the pair, defending the title in front of a packed crowd was another unforgettable milestone in their journey.
