Artificial Intelligence (AI) is steadily proving its value in law enforcement, and a recent case in Nagpur has highlighted its impact. On August 9, a speeding truck hit a couple riding a motorcycle, killing the woman on the spot. The shocking visuals of her husband carrying her body back to their village tied to his bike drew widespread attention on social media.

The only clue the husband could share was that the truck had red markings. With no other leads, police turned to Maharashtra’s AI-powered platform — MARVEL (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement).

Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police Harsh Poddar explained that officers collected CCTV footage from three toll booths 15–20 km apart. MARVEL’s visual algorithms were then deployed. One tool filtered trucks with red markings, while another tracked unusual speed patterns. From thousands of frames, the system identified a truck that matched the description. Within 36 hours, police traced it to the Gwalior-Kanpur highway, arrested the driver, and seized the vehicle.

Poddar noted that the AI system reduced weeks of manual work to minutes. We had 12 hours of footage that normally takes at least a day to review. MARVEL processed it in just 15 minutes, he said.

Maharashtra is the first state to fully own and operate an AI-driven system for policing. MARVEL is being expanded across 13 departments to tackle financial fraud, organised crime, and other challenges. Several states have already expressed interest in adopting this model.

Police officials clarified that AI is not replacing traditional investigation but is making it faster and more accurate. In the Nagpur case, a vague description turned into a major breakthrough — proving how technology can transform modern policing.
