Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy issued a stern warning that industrial units releasing untreated wastewater directly into local water bodies face immediate shutdown orders and power disconnections.
Speaking at a press conference at Vidhana Soudha, the minister announced that he has directed officials to issue immediate violation notices to polluting enterprises. The crackdown specifically targets industrial sectors, such as dyeing facilities, which bypass mandatory effluent treatment protocols. Authorities received explicit instructions to compile a comprehensive list of non-compliant businesses operating near regional rivers and major drainage systems across the state.
The policy shift follows high-level discussions with representatives from the Pollution Control Board and the water supply administration. Officials plan to hold separate coordination meetings with industrial area development authorities to enforce mandatory wastewater processing rules statewide.
The state’s environmental challenges stem from massive daily water consumption. Bengaluru relies on billions of liters daily from the Cauvery River alongside hundreds of thousands of active borewells. Approximately eighty percent of this supply converts into wastewater, generating thousands of megaliters of sewage daily. While existing facilities process a portion of this volume, a substantial amount continues to flow untreated into the environment.
The untreated discharge prompted neighboring Tamil Nadu to file a formal complaint with the National Green Tribunal, leading to heightened regulatory pressure on local authorities. In response, the administration accelerated infrastructure projects to expand treatment capacity through a phased timeline stretching toward the end of the decade.
Municipal authorities also face strict oversight regarding domestic waste management. Officials discovered that numerous residential properties bypass available sewage networks to dump wastewater directly into open stormwater drains. The minister mandated that all residential complexes with over eighty units must operate functional treatment plants, while non-compliant local municipal bodies will face formal warning notices. Furthermore, the minister announced plans to personally inspect regional water project sites to verify treatment standards firsthand and ensure strict regulatory adherence.
