In a special tribute to one of the most celebrated elephants associated with the Mysuru Dasara festivities, the State Government has decided to honour Abhimanyu for his long and distinguished service to the historic Jamboo Savari.

Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and Kolar district in-charge Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy has directed the Forest Department to accord full government honours to Abhimanyu during this year’s Dasara and lead him at the forefront of the grand Jamboo Savari as the ‘Nishane Elephant’ (flag elephant).

The minister issued the direction in a letter dated September 3, 2026, highlighting the importance of elephants in preserving the grandeur, tradition and cultural heritage of the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.

The Mysuru Dasara Jamboo Savari is not merely a spectacular procession; it is a living symbol of the city’s royal legacy, cultural traditions and the deep bond between humans and elephants. Over the years, the Dasara elephants have become an inseparable part of the festivities, drawing thousands of visitors and occupying a special place in the hearts of Mysureans.

Among them, Abhimanyu has earned a unique reputation through his years of dedicated service. His calm demeanour, strength, discipline and majestic presence have made him one of the most admired members of the Dasara elephant contingent.

The Government has recognised the elephant’s contribution to the historic festival and decided that his service deserves a place of honour in the 2026 Dasara celebrations.

‘Nishane Elephant’ to March with Pride

According to the minister’s direction, Abhimanyu will be given a prominent position in this year’s Jamboo Savari and will be accorded ceremonial government honours before being led as the Nishane Elephant.

The move is being seen as a fitting recognition of an elephant that has played a significant role in the Dasara tradition. His presence at the head of the majestic procession is expected to add an extra touch of grandeur and emotion to the celebrations.

A royal tribute to a veteran

For generations, the Dasara elephants have carried the spirit of Mysuru’s royal traditions onto the streets. By honouring Abhimanyu, the Government is not only recognising an individual elephant but also paying tribute to the dedicated service of the entire Dasara elephant team.

As the city prepares for another spectacular Dasara, the sight of Abhimanyu marching proudly at the forefront of the Jamboo Savari is certain to become one of the festival’s most memorable moments.

A veteran tusker, a cherished Dasara icon—and this year, a flag-bearer of Mysuru’s glorious tradition.
