Nuliya Chandayya’s work ethic inspires youth, says DC

Deputy Commissioner C.N. Sridhar said the life and values of 12th-century Shiva devotee Nuliya Chandayya remain highly relevant today, especially for young people.

He said Chandayya’s belief in honest work and service offers an important lesson for modern society.

Sridhar was speaking after inaugurating the Nuliya Chandayya Jayanti-2026 programme organised by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and Kannada and Culture Department at the District Administration Bhavan on Friday. He said Chandayya, a contemporary of Basavanna, earned his livelihood through rope-making and used his income to help others.

The Deputy Commissioner said Chandayya followed the principle of “Kayakave Kailasa” by giving great respect to labour. He encouraged people to become self-reliant, work honestly and contribute to society. He also noted that Chandayya travelled across the country after the Kalyana Kranti, spreading Vachana literature and Sharan ideals while associating with several Sharans.

Dr. Shantakumar B. Bhajantri, Executive President of the Gadag branch of the Dalit Sahitya Academy, said the ideals of equality, labour and social justice promoted by the Sharanas continue to guide society. He called for deeper research into Chandayya’s life. He also recalled stories showing Chandayya’s strong devotion to honest labour and refusal to accept more than the fair value of his work.

During the programme, students who secured top marks in SSLC and PUC examinations and successful sportspersons were felicitated. Additional District Collector Dr. Durgesh K.R., Urban Development Authority Chairman Akbar Sahab Babarchi, Assistant Director Basavaraj V. Bellary and community leaders attended. The event concluded by honouring achievement and remembering the lasting value of dedicated work.
