Trump urges diplomatic Ukraine war settlement

Trump urges Russia to pursue a Ukraine peace deal after discussions with Zelenskiy and G7 leaders.

EVIAN-LES-BAINS

US President Donald Trump called on Russia to move toward a peace deal with Ukraine following what he described as a positive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy during the G7 summit in France. Trump said he had a “very good” discussion with Zelenskiy and other G7 leaders and added that he would do everything possible to help end the ongoing war. He also said Russia should take steps to reach an agreement and bring the conflict to a close.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the G7 summit held in Evian-les-Bains, where global leaders gathered to discuss major international issues, including the wars in Ukraine and tensions involving Iran. Zelenskiy said the focus of his discussions with world leaders was strengthening Ukraine’s air defence systems and pushing forward diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war. He also stressed the need for continued international support.

European leaders at the summit said they believed Russia was currently under pressure on the battlefield and that Ukraine’s position had improved in recent months. They urged stronger backing for Kyiv to increase its negotiating strength. Trump also held talks with European partners, who encouraged him to avoid any weak or temporary peace arrangements and instead push for a stronger long-term settlement.

The summit also addressed tensions in the Middle East, including concerns over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran-related security issues. While diplomatic efforts continue, divisions remain among allies over how to structure future negotiations and how much pressure should be placed on Russia and Iran in upcoming talks.
