Spirit Airlines shuts down after failed rescue talks

New Delhi

Spirit Airlines on Saturday announced it is shutting down operations and initiating an orderly wind-down after failing to secure a financial lifeline from lenders and the US government.

The airline cancelled all scheduled flights with immediate effect and suspended customer support services. Passengers have been advised not to head to airports, as the company’s website now provides detailed guidance on refunds and next steps.

The decision comes after negotiations over a potential rescue package collapsed, leaving the airline without the funds needed to sustain operations. Despite attempts to arrange emergency financing, discussions with creditors and government authorities failed to produce an agreement, effectively sealing the airline’s fate.

Spirit Airlines cited mounting cost pressures, particularly rising fuel prices, as a major factor behind its deteriorating financial condition. The company noted that recent increases in oil prices, coupled with broader operational challenges, significantly weakened its outlook and ability to continue as a going concern.

Refunds for eligible bookings made through credit or debit cards are expected to be processed automatically. Customers with other types of claims will have to seek resolution through ongoing bankruptcy proceedings as part of the wind-down process.

The airline said it will continue coordinating with vendors, partners, and other stakeholders during this period and will provide updates through the legal process as required.

The shutdown marks the end of an airline that operated for more than three decades and became a prominent player in the US ultra-low-cost aviation segment, known for its budget fares and no-frills service model.
