Three UP athletes under doping cloud after syringes found at U-20 meet

India faces rising doping scrutiny after being labelled extremely high risk globally

Three athletes from Uttar Pradesh, including two minors, have come under suspicion for possible doping violations after syringes were allegedly found in their hotel room during the National Junior Federation Competition in Tumakuru.

The incident reportedly unfolded when a strong smell of medicines from a room at a hotel near Mahatma Gandhi Stadium raised concerns among officials. Upon inspection, a plastic bag containing syringes was discovered, prompting immediate action and raising serious questions about potential substance abuse.

The athletes—one a 19-year-old 400m runner and the other two competing in the 5000m and 1500m events—had all participated in the meet but failed to progress beyond the qualifying rounds. Following the discovery, authorities identified the occupants and alerted the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA).

However, by the time anti-doping officials reached the hotel, the athletes and an accompanying adult had reportedly absconded. Sources indicated that the adult, believed to be a former athlete, is suspected of influencing the youngsters, raising further concerns about exploitation and misuse of substances at the junior level.

The case comes at a time when India is under increased scrutiny over doping practices. Recently, World Athletics’ Integrity Unit classified India as a country with an “extremely high” risk of doping, intensifying the spotlight on enforcement and preventive measures.

Officials from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) confirmed that the matter is under investigation. The alleged possession of syringes also violates the federation’s strict “No Needle Policy”, which prohibits athletes and support staff from carrying or using injectable equipment without proper medical justification.

Under AFI rules, such violations can lead to immediate disqualification and suspensions of up to three years. If linked to banned substances, NADA may impose even harsher penalties, including a four-year ban.

The three-day competition, which concluded on Sunday, featured over 1,000 athletes and served as trials for the upcoming U-20 Asian Athletics Championships in Hong Kong. Notably, syringes were also reportedly found in stadium washrooms earlier in the event, prompting heightened vigilance from organisers.

Authorities are now tracking the athletes involved, and further action is expected once they are located, as the case adds to growing concerns over doping in Indian athletics.
